I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW MY DAD

I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW MY DAD

SHE WAS OLD AND GREY, SHE WAS MY OLD LADY
THAT GIRL SHOWED ME THE WAY LIFE WAS MEANT TO BE SHADY'

I DIDN'T KNOW HER UNTIL MY DADDY SAID SHE WAS DYING
HE HELD ME CLOSE TO HIS HEART, THEN WE BOTH STARTED CRYING

HE SAD, "SON, IT'S REALLY BEEN WONDERFUL
THE GOOD TIMES THAT WE SHARED
I'M GLAD YOU CAME HOME TO MEET YOUR MOM
I DIDN'T THINK YOU CARED

I NEVER FELT SO MUCH HURT AS I SAW IN MY DAD'S EYES
I TOLD HIM THAT I WOULD BE THERE, THAT MOMMA COULDN'T DIE

SOON MOMMA GOT WORSE
HER FACE WAS SO WHITE
LORD, HIDE MY SORROWS
THEY BUILT UP THAT NIGHT

I KNEW IT WAS TIME WHEN DADDY GRABBED MOMMA'S HAND
KISSED HER GENTLY AND SIGHED, THEN HE CRIED LIKE A MAN

HE SAID, " SON, IT'S REALLY BEEN WONDERFUL
THE GOOD TIMES WE SHARED
I'M GLAD YOU CAME HOME TO MEET YOUR MOM
I DIDN'T THINK YOU CARED."

EVEN WHEN I WAS THERE MY DAD WAS ALONE
DIDN'T THINK IT WAS FAIR WHEN I HEARD ON THE PHONE
"IS THIS YOU JOHN?..YOUR DADDY'S GONE
HE COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT YOUR MOM
FROM ALL THE GOOD TIMES THAT WE HAD
I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW MY DAD.
